The Kawashima Family

The Kawashima Family are the next door neighbours to the Havershams! Despite their foreign heritage, this family is about as American as they can get!

Hideki Kawashima

Hideki Kawashima is a first-generation immigrant from Japan. He arrived in the country back in 1932, making a small business for himself which lasted for a little while and made him moderately wealthy. This all lasted until 1942, when he and his family were stripped of all his possessions by the American government and forced to live in an internment camp until 1945. Luckily, he was able to regain part of his fortune and his business, employing his "friends" to help him do so. Who these friends are, nobody knows.

Kawashima usually has a cheerful demeanour on him, and is known by his peers to be an extremely pleasant person. However, under this cheerfulness is a darker side of him that hasn't been seen by anyone but himself. Ronald has a particular distrust for the man, believing that he's a Chinese Communist infiltrator, despite evidence to the contrary.

Betty Kawashima

Betty Kawashima is Hideki's wife. Unlike her husband, Betty happens to be a second-generation immigrant. She is much more versed in the American ways of life than her husband because of it, and she usually gets along with Dorothy Haversham.

Stan Kawashima

Stan Kawashima is the Kawashima Family's 16 year old son, torn between following his Japanese Heritage and the traditions of everyday American life. He is the star quarterback on the Midway High School's football team, and is generally athletic. Despite its non-Japanese origins, he's a fan of Rock and Roll music, something that unlike the Havershams, the Kawashima family absolutely love. Nancy has a crush on him, and although he's unaware of it, he also has a crush on her. Could we be seeing a budding romance?
