Siege of Fire/Chapter 1

Summary

The story opens to Jouinchi no Heian, living with his hermit, who tells him about his greatness. And so, Heian begins to ponder on leaving his home.

Transcript

"The sun shined upon the window, reflecting into a shard of glass on Heian's nightstand. He tries to ignore it and turn his head, but the cracked open door shines more sunlight in his face."

HEIAN: All right, world. I'm up. Now, let me just lie down again.

"This is Jounichi No Heian. He is a stark young man, and on today, his 21st birthday, he'll learn something he believes to be improbable. As he heads down the staircase of the hermitage, he looks at the small pin-up calendar to see that today is his rightful day of birth."

HEIAN: What the? Does that really say...IT DOES! YAHOO! IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!

"He quickly covers his mouth and shoots his eyes in multiple directions, to see if anyone had seen him, or heard him. From the looks of it, nobody had."

HEIAN: Look at me. Acting like I'm 12 years old again. But, Its too late for something like that. That day passed by many a year ago.

"He heads for the small table in the middle of the room, picking up a small glass and a bottle of juice. As he pours it in, a small, hunchbacked man, carrying a staff, dressed in a tunic, heads down the stairs as well, stroking his beard."

HERMIT: Why, hello, Jouinchi. Happy birthday!

HEIAN: Thanks, sir. But, do you think you can call me Heian, like everyone else does?

HERMIT: But that would be disrespectful. Now, I'm glad you're older. But, there is something you must learn. But, I hate to spoil your day.

HEIAN: Aww, you can tell me!

HERMIT: It's much too powerful to tell you. I wouldn't want to leave too much on your shoulders.

HEIAN: Aww. Wait. I was supposed to...OH NO! I forgot about Daichi! See ya later, hermit!

HERMIT: Farewell, my student.

"Heain returns upstairs, puts on his glasses, his shoes, and jumps out of his window on the third floor, swinging off of a branch, and landing below, to meet his friend, Daichi, who he had known since he had came to the Hermitage."

HEIAN: Daichi! I almost forgot!

DAICHI: Well, It's a good thing you didn't. I would've left if you hadn't come in a few minutes!

HEIAN: Praise the lord you have a large focus.

DAICHI: That's a little offensive, don't you think?

HEIAN: You get what I mean. Now, come on!

"Heian and Daichi both run off into the forest. They end up in a deep part, where there is a small dummy, a damaged tree, and a pond."

DAICHI: Think you can beat me now?

HEIAN: With 16 years of experience, anything is possible!

"The 2 sparred for a long while. Heian would use only kicks, whereas Daichi would punch and jab. Then, they would switch, back and forth, 3 times. Then they tallied up the victories."

DAICHI: 4-0. Looks like I win again.

HEIAN: Looks like you do.

DAICHI: Weird. You don't seem as glum as usual. Why so?

HEIAN: I just turned 21, and you think I'm gonna be sad at the smallest thing? You're kidding.

DAICHI: Right. what was I thinking?

"The two unusually spent the rest of their day, just sitting under that tree, looking up at the stars. Heian glimpsed at the small fire inside the hermitage, probably being lit by the Hermit. However, this fire began to spread and spread, making Heian run, disregarding Daichi and focusing only on what could be happening to the Hermit. As he hopped through the window, he noticed his Hermit, crushed by a beam."

HEIAN: MASTER!!! Are you OK?

HERMIT: Heian, I'm afraid I will not survive in this fire.

HEIAN: Don't say that! I'll save you!

"He tugged and tugged on the Hermit's arm, but the Hermit didn't try to get up. When Heian lost his energy, he pulled Heian in closely."

HERMIT: Heian. You are, in actuallity, a FireSpitter. A special race born to rid the world of evil with the force of Fire. It can be summoned at any time. But, I will not live to see your accomplishments. I am sorry. But, stay powerful and alive, my student.

"The Hermit let out a moan, and died on that spot. Heian couldn't make it out, or so he thought. But then he opened his eyes, stood up, and began moving around, and with him, the fire went. So, he had taken in a big breath, which absorbed all of the fire in the area. The he sent it out of the top of the hermitage."
