The Deva, or Devaians are a humanoid species widely known for their philosophical minds and peaceful culture. Hailing from the planet Deva, the Devaians are historically known to be the first extraterrestrial race to make official contact with the humans.

The Devaians were one of the first races to develop warp drive, though a century would pass between the first warp flight and the breaking of the cosmic barrier. The Devaians conducted a series of survey missions to the Milky Way Galaxy, as early as 1947. It was from there, where they studied the human race for decades, and marvelled at their constant discoveries. On 2166, the Devaians finally decided to make themselves known to the humans, sending a survey vessel to the surface of Mars where a Devaian official met with Mars' Ambassador, George Roddenbury. It was through this meeting where the two races formed an alliance, signing a treaty to make it official.

The Devaians eventually became Humankind's "big brother" in a way, advising Earth officials on how to proceed into the galaxy. The Devaian High Command considered Humans volatile and prone to violence if provoked, and so attempted to slow down Humanity's move into the galaxy until the time was right. Their attempt had failed, as Humankind showed a willing, and their sense of ambition allowed them to break the barriers. Even in 2312, the Devaians still happen to be one of Humanity's closest allies.

Genetically, Devaians and Humans are similar enough that they could produce offspring without any problems.

Externally, Devaians were generally similar to Humans, the chief exceptions being the Devains' extra set of arms below their main two. The chance of Devaian cross-breeds having this feature however, depends on the overall genetics of the parents.

Most Devaians had straight, glossy dark brown or, more commonly, black hair and blue skin with a very subtle greenish tinge, much as the skin of Humans of European descent had a very subtle reddish or pinkish tinge.
