Commander JC is the Leviathan's old, mean, and selfish first officer and former captain. Born into a wealthy family on Earth, JC originally bought the Leviathan X to show off at dinner parties. When his father was convicted for a Ponzi scheme and left them all broke, however, JC decided to use his space shuttle to explore the final frontier in search of a new life.

During his exploration, he was joined by a crew of similarly down-on-their-luck aliens and robots, and what started out as an Eden-finding adventure quickly spiraled into a dangerous and confusion-ridden intergalactic work-for-hire as JC struggled to feed his crew and maintain the stability necessary to run an effective ship. Fifty years later, JC took galactic hitchhiker Seth Lindström under his wing and, impressed by his eagerness to get the job done, soon made Seph the Leviation's new captain while staying on to advise him and help out with the duties.

86-year-old JC likes to treat the others, including and especially Seth, as his inferiors. Made bitter by years of futile enterprising, he explodes at the smallest provocation and never hesitates to threaten bodily harm. He also plays as an obsessive-compulsive comic foil for Seph, whose laid-back nature he criticizes frequently. They have different physical as well as emotional characteristics, with JC's shortness and baldness contrasting Seth's more youthful attributes. Despite all this, he considers himself to be a father figure for Seph and is always there when the captain needs him.

JC hates the ship's crew, and most of the crew feel the same way about him. The orders he give tend to fall on deaf ears, and he complains to Seth about the crew's lack of discipline on a regular basis. Whenever Seph is rendered incapable of leading the ship for whatever reason, JC returns to the post and uses his temporary power to terrorize the crew.

Thanks to his lavish upbringing, JC has an extremely high opinion of himself and has displayed many symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder. In particular, he considers himself to be the ladies' man of the group, despite the repulsion of almost every member of every female species towards him. He also claims to be an extremely skilled warrior, despite the fact that he's usually the first person to get captured, facts that Seph is often quick to point out upon such remarks.
