I had many characters undergo things through my current (at the time of writing) tabletop group. The literal first character I made for this group was actually a Warhammer 40,000 character for the Rogue Trader module. Her name was the last thing I had thought up of when going through character creation. Strapped for time, I settled for Rin Volkmire. I suspected I could've made something a little better; the concept of her was "Anti-Firefly."
Easy enough, right?
Well...
Playing a standard-for-universe human was difficult, given I often identified with more monstrous races and characters throughout my whole life. Being persecuted and seen as a monster my whole life for being autistic hadn't helped, and still wouldn't help, make roleplaying a proper human actually something I could do with minimal error. The difficulty continued to exist even with Warhammer 40,000. I normally weaponized my limitation by writing "humanized" individuals, of whom could normally be categorized as Anti-Villains if I decided, on a whim, to take TVTropes seriously.
I had befriended a person who wanted so desperately to play a Freebootin' Ork in Rogue Trader. My Storyteller wasn't fond of this other person's wants. To wit, The Freebooter had a track record of only playing combat characters, specifically melee combat characters. They would normally be physically-oriented, almost to the point of Minmaxing and Powergaming being involved in what the Freebooter did. Given the Orks were, and still are, the least grimdark race in Warhammer 40,000, I liked Orks the most but was accepting to play a standard Imperium-supporting character to be appropriate to what everyone else in the group was doing. To note, the Freebooter never showed up to a single session. His reason cited was "too busy with life." The team had engineered the ship to be able to permit an Ork on the ship, with the Storyteller's assistance.
At any rate, Rin Volkmire had developed many neuroses. She drank tranq as a form of pain-killer, because the rite to becoming an Astropath hurt her to the point of blinding her. The rite involved seeing the God-Emperor of Man in person proper, and not dying. The God-Emperor of Man had a habit of needing 10,000 human souls a day to maintain his psychic energy, due to being rendered a vegetable otherwise in a conflict with his son Horus. Because of how divine the God-Emperor of Man had become, the human souls would get mulched and anyone who saw his physical forme would be rendered blind. They would also be rendered a potential avatar of the God-Emperor by virtue of him being able to control whomever saw his physical forme.
She also was taken from her Voidborn home, with the help of a man named Inquisitor Isaac. He was not much older than her at the time. She fell in love with him. However, her love of him would only be reciprocated during a Dark Eldar raid, which ultimately killed Isaac in spite of Rin attempting to call for support to bring him back to base and be healed. Comms was jammed, and Isaac mentioned how he had always liked and appreciated Rin. She cried and swore to avenge him, growing a hatred for Dark Eldar that lasted throughout the entirety of the campaign. She would not like normal Eldar either, as they and their weapons chopped one of her legs off. The group's tech-priest was going to make a robotic leg for her.
She developed a split personality that was Orky. Out-of-character, I liked the Freebooter. He amused me. That said, he didn't like me back much if at all. Since I liked the Freebooter and he wasn't around, I decided to attempt to carry the spirit of what the Freebooter wanted. On an ice planet, when Orks would have attempted to attack us anyway, I declared, "Waaagh!" and got unlucky. When I awoke, I took note of Rin's hobby of painting and had her paint herself green (to become more Orky) and purple (to become more stealthy) while slowly developing more Orky quirks over time. I wasn't sure if this was a legitimately good idea, but Rin was already rendered neurotic due to this being Warhammer 40,000.
Rin Volkmire could easily be rewritten, if someone wanted to help me, for a different game. However, she is only appropriate for Rogue Trader itself. Any other module for Warhammer 40,000 would need a lot of story overhaul in order for her to function in it.
