'''The Ripper''' is the commonly given nickname to a certain '''Jacques DuFour''', a notorious mercenary and serial killer wanted by several governments all over the world. A member of the mysterious organization "Byzantium", Jacques is gifted with several superhuman abilities brought upon by the use of nanotechnology and cybernetic enhancements. Trained at a young age to be a potent killer, he is proficient in the use of weaponry and close quarter combat. He is skilled in tracking and is known for his relatively calm and stoic demeanor in all situations, to the point of his presence being rather unnerving, even to his allies.

Having no direct and personal motives, Jacques works under the command of the Byzantium Corporation, completing various high-risk tasks for them with a high proficiency. Because of this, he is considered among the organization's most elite members, acting as the muscle and second in command of the subgroup of the "Varangian Guard", a group who answer directly to the organization's leader.

Jacques is Algerian of French Descent; he was born and raised in the middle of a violent guerrilla conflict between the Algerian Government and various violent rebel groups, surrounded by gunfire, sirens, and screams. Orphaned at an early age, Jacques spent his young years trying to survive, while at the same time trying to protect his sister, Oiracul from harm.

One day, Jacques and his sister witnessed the merciless slaughter of everyone in their village by the armed rebel militia, and was forced to flee completely to places unknown. It was during these travels where they ran into a group of travelling pilgrims, bound to a semi-religious group known as the "Order of the White Duke". Seeing potential in the two, they took them in and decided to train them in the arts, eventually taking them back to their American headquarters in Phoenixshire, Listless.

After being introduced to another recruit, Joseph, the three were put into a group, where they were each assigned different roles. Joseph as a Paladin, Oiracul as a Cleric, and Jacques as a Ranger. Jacques' job required him to be away from the rest of the order for a long time, with usually months passing before he returned. With each passing phase of his presence, Jacques' colleagues found his behaviour to become stranger and stranger, every time he returned. It had seemed as if he was losing all aspects of his character, with shows of emotion becoming less and less frequent, save for the occasional burst of anger and rage at the most trivial of situations.

Truth is, during the months that he was away from home, Jacques had not been fulfilling his tasks as a ranger at all. Still a young boy, Jacques' mind was still very malleable. Jacques had been scouted out by the Byzantium Corporation, an organization spanning many generations back with a history of animosity with The Order. Noticing his association with the order, a Byzantine specialist approached him during one of his travels and invited him to one of their bases of operation in North America. Going against common sense, Jacques followed the man to the base, where he was seen by a variety of psychologists and subjected to many bouts of testing, both physical and psychiatric. All of it was done in a way that was subtle, so that Jacques had little suspicion in part of it. This, along with the training given by The Order, gave Jacques a unique set of characteristics.

Years went by as Jacques was practically swapped between the two groups, with The Order knowing nothing of his engagements with Byzantium. Jacques, along with the rest of the group rose through the ranks in The Order, where the day finally came for all three of them to be considered fully fledged members, ready to take on important missions worldwide. As the chapter leader went to present Jacques with his ceremonial weapon, Jacques suddenly and unexpectedly turned the weapon towards the leader, stabbing him in the heart. Jacques had been subliminally conditioned to infiltrate The Order of The White Duke, and to kill the leader during the most unexpected time. Sent into a state of delirium and blind fury by his actions and the conditioning of the Byzantium Organization, Jacques took his anger towards the rest of the order, taking down several guards and elite members single-handedly before he decided to flee. Angered by the sudden betrayal of his best friend, Joseph set out to hunt him down himself as revenge for what he had done to The Order, to Oiracul's protests. Hours later, the two tracked him down to a cliffside at the edge of the water, where Jacques had become almost animal-like in his state, almost as if he were a wolf.

Joseph charged at him, and the two fought viciously, both of them consumed by animalistic rage. The two were almost evenly matched, and Joseph even managed to gain the upper hand until Jacques managed to find an opening in his defense, where he took him down by slashing his throat. Before he even managed to fall, Jacques grabbed him and threw him over the cliffside into the water, before turning to his own his sister. Before he was able to do anything, she managed to throw him over too with a series of quick magic spells, supposedly killing her brother before he could do any more harm to The Order. Filled with shame for that day, Oiracul swore to never tarnish the memory of the brother she once knew, creating an alternative story where he died heroically with his best friend while trying to protect the order.

For Byzantium however, everything went according to plan perfectly. Their sleeper agent had performed his task better than anyone at the organization had even expected. It was finally time to put him under full initiation as a Byzantine Agent. They performed several experiments on him, injecting nanomachines into his bloodstream and outfitting his body with several cybernetic enhancements, doing away with several organic aspects of his body, until the point came where he was more machine than man. Between experiments, he was also part of a re-education program, where he was conditioned to forget all aspects of his past and to install loyalty to the organization within his mind. By the end of the process, Jacques was no longer the man he used to be. The Organization had stripped him of all identity and being, turning him into an elite killing machine. He was finally just another monster.
